ABOUT TADEJ
DID YOU KNOW …
WAY TO THE TOP
On September 21, 1998, Tadej is born in Klanec near Komenda. His interest in sports appears quite soon – first he trains football at NK Komenda, but when his brother Tilen joins the Rog Ljubljana cycling club under the mentorship of Miha Koncilja, he decides he wants to try cycling too. In 2007 he also becomes a member of the Rog Ljubljana cycling club. He quickly joins the group and proves himself on the slopes. In 2008, at the tender age of ten, he drives his first race at Trstenik near Kranj and in 2009 he achieves his first cycling victory in the ascent to Krvavec.
Over the next few years, he is trained by different coaches who help him strengthen his knowledge and skills. He achieves better results each time, until the UAE Team Emirates professional team takes an interest in him due to his excellent ratings. In 2018 he signs a contract with them and in 2019 he joins the team. Already in his first big race, the Spanish Vuelta in 2019, he wins third place overall and becomes the best young cyclist of the season. He achieves world fame in 2020, when he becomes the first Slovenian joint winner of the Tour de France. The following year, the success is repeated and he goes down in history as the youngest two-time winner of the Tour de France, and he also wins a bronze medal for Slovenia in the road race at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Already in his first professional season in 2019, he wins Volta ao Algarve and Tour of California – aged only 20, he becomes the youngest rider to win a UCI WorldTour stage race. In his debut Grand Tour, Vuelta a España, he finishes on overall third-place and wins the young rider title.
Year 2020 is groundbreaking for him: he becomes the first Slovenian to win Tour de France. This colossal success is repeated the following year, 2021, which is marked by many more triumphs: he wins Tour de Slovenia and takes bronze at the men’s road race at the Olympic games. He alwo wins two classic races, one-day Monuments Liège–Bastogne–Liège and Giro di Lombardia. He finishes the season as the year-end top ranked road cyclist in 2021.
